Dance Collective

Friday, September 16, 2016 at 7:30pm

$20 General, $10 UHH/HCC Student with Valid ID/Child

Why do we dance? Because there is nothing in the world quite like it. It is often athletic. Sometimes it is lyrical or percussive, at other times powerful and moody, or joyful, exuberant, introspective or heartrending. It can be done alone or as part of a unique communal experience. Dance evokes feeling and captures and projects the ful spectrum of emotion often without words and it transcends race, language, orientation, age and gender, speaking to us in a way we all instinctively understand.

The primary goal of putting together this dance concert is to bring the vast array of choreographers and dancers from all over Hilo to one stage to dialog and share with one another, as well as with the audience, the gift of their talents and passions. By sharing in their love of dance as well as their mutual desire to create bridges within the community, everyone involved will benefit. Movement discoveries will be made, new friendships will occur and the foundations for dance will strengthen and increase over time.

This first annual dance collective is the stepping stone to what will hopefully become an enriching and educational experience for participants and audience members alike. Showcasing young and upcoming choreographers and dancers as well as established performers from Center Stage Dance Alliance, Island Dance Academy, N2 Dance, and the UH Hilo Dance department to name but a few, this one night only show will feature a range of dance styles displaying the dynamic skill and creativity of our dance collective.

The proceeds from this event will go toward providing dance opportunities for our island community and perpetuating this event.

Hot Club of San Francisco: Meet Me In Paris

Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 7:00pm

Love songs and driving gypsy jazz are a combination made famous during the 20's and 30's in Paris by the legendary Hot Club de France, Django Reinhardt, and Stephane Grappelli. The Hot Club's unique sound of gypsy jazz reflects the inter-wartime collection of cultures. Keep time with the strum of the rhythm guitars and let the magical guitar and fiddle solos take you on a ride down the Seine and through the heart of the city. Ms. Fontaine's mix of sweet and sultry songs adds a touch of beauty and authenticity that echoes the historic Ville-Lumiere, "the city of light".

Meet Me in Paris and dance the night away to the acclaimed sound of the Hot Club of San Francisco and the popular French vocalist Isabelle Fontaine. Even if you don't dance come enjoy the concert with hors d'oeuvres, patisserie and wine, invoking an unforgettable Parisian experience.

Back by popular demand: Suprise Boxes will be available at the event.

The proceeds of this event will benefit the UH Hilo Performing Arts Center Scholarship Fund and the Center's programs.
